Extasia

Stephanie Freydont (Extasia)Stefanie Freydont has created a brand born of the contemporary woman’s desire for unique jewellery that is as fresh and exciting as the modern world while still recognizing and respecting classical beauty and craftsmanship.

She is the energetic, creative force behind Extasia. Trained as a silver and goldsmith from the age of 15, she decided her life would always involve beauty. For many years she maintained a studio specialising in hand fabricated 18ct gold and precious stone jewellery before starting to design using glass intaglios, which has become her signature look.

The reverse of a cameo, the intaglio is an image carved into stone.

The manufacture of glass stones was made popular around 1910 by the designer Renee Lalique, the majority of the stones coming from south western Czechoslovakia. The upheaval caused in Europe by the Second World War meant that many of the factories were destroyed. After the war factories were rebuilt and moulds which had been lost were recreated from stones sold to the US and other importers prior to the outbreak of war. Today Extasia uses many of these post-war moulds which are exclusive to them. The glass stones are made using the same techniques and tools developed over a century ago.

Glass rods are heated in large furnaces to cherry red then pressed into shape in steel moulds. Cooled over a 24 hour period, in order to avoid rapid changes in temperature which causes cracking in glass, the stones are trimmed and hand ‘edged’. The finish, either matt or polished, is then applied. Master craftsmen undertake all aspects of this work.

All metal castings are original.

The metal is red bronze and it can be plated as well in silver.

All baroque pearls are real freshwater pearls.

Stefanie pays close attention to colour trends and she mixes necklaces, for example, with vintage glass. By doing so, Extasia marries yesterday’s penchant for the elegant and exotic with today’s demand for the extraordinary and fashion forward.
